Luis ‘Chapulin’ Diaz joins the flourishing 8Star Motorsports team for the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship sprint races.
The Mexican racer had a prolific Karting career before racing extensively in open-wheeled competition and then building solid foundations in America’s highest-profile prototype and sportscar contests.
Diaz graduated from Karting to car racing in 1996 and quickly ascended the motorsport ladder, becoming the first ever Mexican Indy Lights race winner and making sporadic Champ Car appearances before switching to sportscars in 2004.
The amiable racer, originally from Mexico City, was teamed with Scott Pruett in the 2005 Rolex Sports Car Series and earned three race wins, eight podium finishes and four pole positions en-route to the runner-up spot in the final Daytona Prototype classification; a feat he repeated in 2006.
A highly successful three-year stint with Lowe’s Fernandez Racing in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) culminated with the 2009 LMP2 Drivers’ title for Diaz and team owner/driver Adrian Fernandez, having achieved nine wins from ten races and three class pole positions.
Diaz, nicknamed ‘the grasshopper’, continued to collect silverware in ALMS and made his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut in 2012, but takes on the TUDOR Championship in 2014 with 8Star LMPC machinery.
